An extraordinary day at school: council-funded sessions connect Bolton’s youth with nature

Using funding** from our friends at Bolton Council, colleagues in our Neighbourhood Services Team delivered sessions at Bolton St Catherine's Academy (pictured), Firwood High School, and Waggon Road Play Centre, each aimed at raising young people’s awareness and appreciation of their local natural environment and the woodlands and wildlife next to their schools.

Activities included:

  • Native bird and bird song identification on the site, creation of bird feeders and bird collage pictures using leaves collected outside (delivered by Lancashire Wildlife Trust)
  • Creating pottery nests, eggs, and bird artworks with Laura (a local artist)
  • Watching Sorin (a local chainsaw sculptor) carve beautiful timber bird sculptures on-site at Bolton St. Catherine's Academy and at Firwood High School (to be installed at Greenroyd Avenue and Newby Rd)

Looking back on the sessions, one teacher at Bolton St. Catherine's Academy said:

“Thanks again for coming in and delivering the sessions for our Year 3s, they absolutely loved it! The children’s faces when they were walking past my classroom were brilliant. They were so happy!”

We’d like to say a special thanks to Bolton Council for supporting these activities. **The funding was provided to the Council by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and was used to improve a green space off Greenroyd Avenue and Newby Road, Breightmet (which is directly next to the schools).

The space - partially owned by us - was selected by the council to receive improvements like new benches and seats, new footpaths, repairs to the steps and new handrails, freshly planted trees on site and in the wider local area, and tree and hedge pruning works to create a more open site with better views across it.
