Can you guess how many bags of litter were collected at recent community litter picking events? (April 2025)

Can you guess how many bags of litter** our staff, primary school pupils, local businesses, residents, and councillors managed to fill during nine community litter picking events in Farnworth and Deane? These events were organised as part of the Great British Spring Clean and Big School Clean Up from 21 March to 6 April 2025.

Along with colleagues in our Neighbourhood Services and Community Engagement teams (who organised and supported these events), we'd also like to say a massive thank-you to:

  • residents from the Princess Grove estate, Farnworth, as well as Cllr Paul Sanders and Cllr Sylvia Crossley, who managed to collect 11 bags of litter within just 45 minutes (Friday 21 March);
  • pupils and staff at Our Lady of Lourdes RC Primary School, Farnworth, and Karen at Bolton Borough Litter Pickers, who collected 19 bags of litter from surrounding areas in an hour (Friday 21 March);
  • pupils and staff at Highfield Primary School, Farnworth, along with Gareth from Love Bolton Hate Litter who managed to collect eight bags of litter in surrounding areas (Monday 24 March);
  • residents from near Farnworth Town Centre, who collected 14 bags of litter on Tuesday 25 March (along with local resident Sharon, who collected a further five bags at the weekend);
  • local resident Barry, staff from SUEZ UK, Love Bolton Hate Litter, Glendale Services, and Bolton Council's Enforcement Team, who managed to collect 49 bags of litter (in one hour) around the Thornbank Estate, Deane (Wednesday 26 March);
  • pupils and staff at Queensbridge Primary School, Gareth from Love Bolton Hate Litter, and Karen from Bolton Borough Litter Pickers who managed to collect 24 bags of litter from surrounding streets and woodland areas (Friday 28 March);
  • pupils and staff at St James C.E. Primary School Farnworth, who managed to fill 14 bags of rubbish in surrounding areas (Wednesday 2 April);
  • and last, but not least - residents from Oak and Ash Estate in Farnworth, along with Stuart, our Farnworth Peer Navigator (www.boltonathome.org.uk/peer-navigators), who managed to fill four bags of litter (Wednesday 2 April).

**Thanks to all their hard work, our litter pickers managed to collect a total of 148 bags of rubbish, resulting in cleaner, greener spaces for everyone to enjoy. You can scroll down to see photos from these litter pick events.

While some of these litter picking events were organised as part of our targeted Farnworth Focus project (www.boltonathome.org.uk/farnworth-focus), our Neighbourhood Services Team frequently organise litter picks in areas throughout the borough. They'll share leaflets in areas before any planned litter picks are due to take place, but we welcome anyone who'd like to volunteer for future events.
