Christmas lights and your safety

Here are our quick tips on using Christmas decorations safely. Please share them with the people you care about if you think they’d be helpful:

  • Check the lights: make sure your lights have proper safety certification symbols (like the ‘UKCA’ mark and/or ‘CE’ mark) and are in good condition. Avoid using lights with frayed or worn cables.
  • Unplug and turn off: you should always turn off and unplug your lights before leaving the house or going to bed. A timer can help you to remember.
  • Don’t overload sockets: watch out for signs of an overloaded socket like sparks, scorch marks, or a hot plastic smell.
  • Use LED lights: low voltage LED lights are safer for indoor use as they stay cool to the touch.
  • Change blown bulbs quickly: you should always replace blown bulbs with the power off to prevent other bulbs from overheating.

Remember – you’ll find more safety advice on our website at: www.boltonathome.org.uk/building-safety. Take care.
