Hate crime reporting centre launched in New Bury

Our New Bury UCAN Centre on George St has become the latest community venue in Bolton where victims or witnesses of hate crime can report incidents in confidence.

We launched it as a third party reporting centre during Hate Crime Awareness Week, with support from Greater Manchester Police, Bolton Council, Bolton College and local groups.

A hate crime is any incident that is perceived by the victim, or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hatred based on race, nationality, religion or beliefs, gender or gender identity, sexuality, disability, lifestyle or dress. Hate incidents can take many forms, including physical attacks, threats and verbal abuse.

PC Simon Findlow, Neighbourhood Beat Officer, said: “People can sometimes be reluctant to report hate incidents and to the police directly. There can be a stigma attached, a fear of reprisals or it could be that people don’t realise that these are criminal offences that we take extremely seriously. So, it’s particularly important to have accessible hubs like this where people can be more comfortable and make reports in confidence.”

Bernadette Tither, Area Learning Manager for Bolton College, said: “This is another positive step for the area and should help break down the fear factor of reporting hate crime, which is a big barrier. We hope it’ll give more people the courage to come forward and not suffer in silence.”

Lisa O’Neill-Rogan, our Community Development Officer for the south, said: “This is just the start. Taking a multi-agency approach and using this centre, we’ll run targeted projects for residents over the next 12 months to engage the community on this issue.”

Incidents can also be reported by telephoning 101, or online through Bolton Council’s dedicated webpage at www.bolton.gov.uk/website/pages/Hatecrime.aspx

The page also includes an e-learning centre. This provides training on positive action that people can take to prevent and tackle hate crime as well as information about The Hate Crime Ambassadors Scheme, which aims to recruit motivated people to raise awareness and encourage more people to report hate crimes.
