Residents help us transform a local park

After securing funds from Bolton Council and Valencia Communities Fund (www.valenciacommunitiesfund.co.uk), we teamed up with local residents to restore an underused park in Hulton.

The site, formerly known as ABC Park, located on Platt Hill Road, was in a state of disrepair and not accessible for children and families.

And following complaints about it becoming a hotspot for anti-social behaviour, colleagues in our Community Engagement Team decided to involve residents in its restoration, inviting people to share their ideas about the future of the site.

Contractors from Complete Construction cleared the park of old play equipment and concrete flooring and laid new grass. It also added raised growing beds across the site and installed several seating areas to encourage dwell time.

We recently hosted a launch event where residents were invited to view the completed space for the first time – and we’re now looking for suggestions of a new name as we continue to develop the site further.

Chris Wood, our South and Central Locality Manager, said: “We’re thrilled with the development of ABC Park and would like to thank Bolton Council, Valencia Communities Fund and every member of the community who contributed to these plans.

“The park has now been reborn into an accessible new green space for our town, which can be enjoyed by children and families for many years to come.”

We secured £20,000 from Bolton Council, following approval from Hulton ward councillors, and a further £46,834 from Valencia Communities Fund – an independent, not-for-profit organisation which provides funding for community, heritage, and biodiversity projects.

Our colleagues involved in this project include Chris Wood, South and Central Locality Manager, Nazira Patel, Community Development Officer and Anthony Holt, Community Engagement Project Officer.
