We support the annual campaign, which raises awareness of gender-based violence against women and girls and runs from 25 November to 10 December.
During the 16 Days, people around the world unite to highlight local and global statistics around domestic abuse, femicide and other gender-based issues, challenging discriminatory attitudes, and calling for improved laws and services to end violence against women and girls.
It's a yearly call to action, a chance to check-in and reflect, a chance to promote vital services, an opportunity to come together to connect, to learn, empower, to challenge, to take up space. To be a change maker.
The campaign has a clear message: we all have the right to live free from harm.
Gender violence is a term used to describe any act done to someone against their will as a result of gender-norms and unequal power relationships. This can include domestic abuse, sexual violence, forced marriage, honour-based acts, exploitation, and female genital mutilation, amongst others.

One of our aims is to increase awareness of the campaign, so, every year, we host an art activity to do just that.
We'll be working with women’s groups and inviting other groups to participate in an art exhibition- and we invite you to join us.
In our planning sessions, safety and safe spaces kept coming up with particular reference to the murder of Sarah Everard, who thought she was in safe hands with a police officer, and in a safe space walking back from her friend’s home.
From these conversations, an idea was formed about hosting an exhibition entitled ‘Safe’. We're inviting you to create content for a box (which we'll decorate as a money safe) using the word ‘Safe’ as inspiration. It could be a positive or negative reaction.
We'll be exhibiting at Bolton Museum and Libraries and Touchstones in Rochdale.
Art forms could include written word, photography, illustration, drawing, painting, abstract- any item of your choosing.
The deadline for submissions is Friday 18 November 2022. Please get in touch using the details below if you're planning to make something.
For more information on e.g., dimensions of your work, please email danielle.porter@boltonathome.org.uk or sarah.taylor@arcon.org.uk.
