What is the Bolton Care and Repair service?

The Bolton Care and Repair service is here to help older and vulnerable residents to live independently in safe, warm, secure, well maintained, and adapted homes.

Bolton Care and Repair is Bolton Council’s Home Improvement Agency that is delivered in partnership with us (Bolton at Home). Please note that this service is only available to Bolton residents.

Advisory list of contractors

We can provide a list of reliable contractors who have agreed to work to a code of conduct.

Available for all households, free of charge.

Affordable warmth/ energy efficiency

We can provide advice on keeping warm at home and any grants that may be available for heating and insulation.

This service is available for all households. Charges are dependent on circumstances.

Fire safety

Smoke alarms and fire safety checks provided by the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

Available to all households, free of charge.

Handyperson service (including gas and electric)

Our Handyperson can help with small jobs around the home such as fixing gutters, fitting door chains, draught proofing, or fixing dripping taps.

Work is time limited to two or three hours depending on the nature of the job.

This service is available to owner occupiers and private tenants aged 65+. If customers are under 65, they must be in receipt of Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment.

Subsidised charges apply.

Home repairs assistance

We offer essential housing repairs to help older people to continue living independently in their homes.

This service is available to owner-occupiers aged 60+ and in receipt of guaranteed Pension Credit or Council Tax Support/reduction. Minimum grant assistance applies.

Housing Options for Older People (HOOP)

If you're over 60, we can give you free advice on housing and care options for your needs and circumstances, whether you rent or own your home. We offer:

  • A link between housing providers.
  • Advice on staying put, or moving on.
  • Advice on adaptations and equipment.
  • Advice on financial support to maximise income.
  • Details on sheltered housing and extra care accommodation tailored to your needs.
  • Assistance with housing application forms and registration.

Housing advice for patients experiencing a Delayed Transfer of Care (DTOC)

A patient is considered to be experiencing a Delayed Transfer of Care (DTOC) when they are clinically ready to be discharged but are still occupying a hospital bed due to a lack of suitable post-discharge housing and/or care options.

We aim to support:

  • Anyone struggling to return home from hospital due to their accommodation no longer meeting their needs.
  • Advice on staying put, or moving on from your current home.
  • Advice on financial support to maximise income.

We can also provide:

  • A list of accommodation tailored to your needs.
  • Assistance with housing application forms and registration.

Referrals can be made by medical staff, social care staff or the patient or family members.

Home improvement assistance

We can provide large scale improvements to make homes decent and healthy for the most vulnerable households.

Availability is based on assessment of property condition and need, and is subject to available discretionary funding.
